RES310 – RESEARCH METHODS Parts of a research proposal Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION (due on or before 09/02/2024) Introduction – the writing should show the gap in knowledge; painting the picture of the ideal versus the real situations which validate the research to be undertaken. Research questions – these are questions the researcher poses to help him or her solve the problem at hand when answered. Hypothesis/ hypotheses – an intelligent guess (es) about the outcome of the study. General objective(s) – what one wants to achieve in a wholesome statement Specific objectives – it is a splitting up of the general (main) objective (s), which are built from the research questions. They are achieved through answers given to the questions. Purpose of the study – the reason behind the study: closely linked to main objective. Significance of the study – it is the justification of the study. It answers supposed questions of who will benefit and how from the findings of the research? Assumptions – these are facts about the outcome, established through the review of literature and related studies about the relationship between the independent and the dependent variables, but which do not require to be tested in the study. Scope and delimitations – describe the geographical delimitations as well as boundaries in terms of what will not be covered by the study. Theoretical framework (theory on which the research is based) – concerns a theory if any that guides the study.
