An INDEPENDENT CLAUSE (also called a main clause) contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. It can stand alone as a sentence. Example: 'The dog barked.' Every sentence must contain at least one independent clause. Simple sentences have one independent clause, compound sentences have two or more independent clauses, and complex sentences have one independent clause plus one or more dependent clauses.
