Argumentative and Discursive Essays

question 1 of 14 Grade: Eleven - G11

Q: What element in an essay introduces the topic and presents the thesis?

Did You Know?

TRUE. This is a fundamental rule that comes from the laws of indices (exponents). When multiplying powers with the same base, you add the exponents: \(a^m \times a^n = a^{m+n}\). In standard form: \((a \times 10^m) \times (b \times 10^n) = (a \times b) \times 10^{m+n}\). Example: \((2 \times 10^3) \times (3 \times 10^4) = (2 \times 3) \times 10^{3+4} = 6 \times 10^7\). Important distinction: Multiplication → ADD exponents. Division → SUBTRACT exponents. Addition/Subtraction → exponents must match (don't add exponents). This is one of the most commonly tested concepts in ECZ Paper 1. Students who confuse these rules lose marks easily. Remember: the operation you perform on the NUMBERS (multiply/divide) determines what you do to the exponents (add/subtract). This principle applies throughout mathematics, from basic algebra to advanced calculus.
