COLLECTIVE NOUNS refer to groups of people or things and can be singular or plural. When we think of the group as a single unit, we use singular verbs: 'The team is winning.' When we think of the individual members, we use plural verbs: 'The team are arguing among themselves.' Other examples: family, class, government, staff, jury. British English tends to use plural verbs more often than American English.
