Structuring a Coherent Argument
Q: What is the term for a statement that provides reasoning or evidence supporting the thesis?
Did You Know?
A colon is most appropriate because it introduces an explanation that directly relates to the independent clause before it. The pattern is: [Independent clause]: [explanation]. In this case, 'She had one goal' is a complete sentence, and 'to win the competition' explains what that goal is. While a dash could also work, colons are preferred in formal writing for this construction. A semicolon would be incorrect because what follows isn't an independent clause.
