A loading dose is a larger initial dose of a drug given to rapidly achieve a therapeutic concentration in the blood and tissues. It is used when a drug has a long half-life, meaning it takes a very long time to reach steady-state levels with regular maintenance dosing. In emergencies or acute conditions (like serious infections or arrhythmias), waiting for the drug to slowly accumulate could be dangerous or ineffective. The loading dose quickly 'fills up' the body's compartments to the desired level.
