Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a common surgical procedure used to treat urinary obstruction caused by Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). A resectoscope (a thin tube with a light and a wire loop) is inserted through the urethra. The wire loop is heated with electrical current and used to chip away (resect) the obstructing inner portion of the prostate gland. The tissue fragments are flushed out with irrigation fluid. TURP is considered the 'gold standard' surgical treatment for BPH, effectively improving urine flow and symptoms. Potential complications include bleeding, infection, retrograde ejaculation, and, rarely, urinary incontinence or erectile dysfunction. Newer minimally invasive techniques (like laser vaporization) are also widely used.
