Carbohydrates: Classification and Functions
Q: What are the two main types of carbohydrates that provide the body with energy?
Did You Know?
True. Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1), also known as somatomedin C, is a peptide hormone that is the primary mediator of the growth-promoting effects of Growth Hormone (GH). While many tissues produce IGF-1 locally, the liver is the major source of circulating (endocrine) IGF-1. GH stimulates hepatocytes (liver cells) to synthesize and secrete IGF-1 into the bloodstream. IGF-1 then exerts effects on various tissues, including bone and cartilage, where it stimulates cell proliferation, differentiation, and protein synthesis, leading to longitudinal bone growth in children and anabolic effects in adults. This GH-IGF-1 axis is a classic example of an endocrine pathway where one hormone (GH) stimulates the production of another (IGF-1) that carries out many of the intended biological effects.
