Cell Communication and Signal Transduction Pathways
Q: In the context of cell signaling, what is a 'second messenger'?

A defining characteristic of a teratoma is the presence of tissues derived from two or more embryonic germ layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm). Therefore, a testicular teratoma can contain a bewildering array of differentiated tissues such as cartilage, bone, muscle, hair, skin, and even rudimentary teeth or thyroid tissue. This occurs because the tumor arises from a pluripotent germ cell that has aberrantly differentiated. In adult males, testicular teratomas are considered malignant (unlike ovarian dermoid cysts). They can be mature (well-differentiated tissues) or immature (fetal-type tissues), but both have malignant potential.
