Hypoglycemia is the medical condition characterized by an abnormally low level of glucose in the blood, typically defined as a plasma glucose concentration below 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L). It is most commonly associated with the treatment of diabetes (especially with insulin or sulfonylureas) but can also occur in non-diabetic individuals due to conditions like insulinoma (an insulin-secreting tumor), critical illness, hormone deficiencies (e.g., cortisol, glucagon), severe liver disease, or excessive alcohol consumption. Symptoms are categorized as neurogenic (autonomic) due to the body's release of epinephrine—such as sweating, trembling, palpitations, and hunger—and neuroglycopenic due to brain glucose deprivation—such as confusion, drowsiness, vision changes, seizures, and loss of consciousness. Severe hypoglycemia is a medical emergency requiring prompt treatment with fast-acting carbohydrates or glucagon.
