Synergism refers to a type of hormonal interaction where the combined effect of two or more hormones acting together is greater than the sum of their individual effects. It's like a multiplicative or amplified effect. One hormone potentiates the action of another. A classic example is the synergistic effect of estrogen and progesterone on the endometrium (uterine lining). Estrogen alone causes proliferation of the endometrial cells. Progesterone alone has a limited effect. However, when progesterone acts on an endometrium that has been primed by estrogen, it triggers the profound secretory changes necessary for implantation. Another example is the synergistic action of growth hormone (GH) and thyroid hormones on bone growth; each enhances the other's effect. This contrasts with permissiveness, where one hormone is required for another to exert its full effect, and antagonism, where hormones oppose each other's actions.
