Reticulocytes are young, immature red blood cells that have just been released from the bone marrow and still contain remnants of RNA. The reticulocyte count is a crucial test that tells you how well the bone marrow is responding to the anemia. A high reticulocyte count (reticulocytosis) means the bone marrow is working hard and producing many new red cells to compensate for the loss, as seen in hemolytic anemia or after bleeding. A low or normal count in the face of anemia suggests the bone marrow is not responding adequately, as in aplastic anemia, iron deficiency, or bone marrow infiltration.
