Prolonged immobility, particularly in a supine position, predisposes patients to urinary stasis—the incomplete emptying of the bladder and stagnant pooling of urine. This stagnant urine provides an ideal medium for bacterial growth. Combined with factors like dehydration, the use of indwelling catheters, and weakened immune defenses, this significantly increases the risk of developing a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). UTIs in immobilized patients can be a source of fever, sepsis, and delirium, and are a common hospital-acquired infection. Prevention strategies include promoting adequate fluid intake, encouraging regular toileting or bladder emptying, and avoiding unnecessary catheterization.
