Circular Food Systems and Waste Management
Q: Which of the following is a principle of 'circular economy' applied to food systems?

The non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium lining the ectocervix and vagina serves several crucial protective functions. Its multi-layered structure (stratified) provides a robust mechanical barrier against friction during intercourse, childbirth, and other physical stresses. Unlike keratinized skin, it remains moist and flexible (non-keratinized), which is essential for its anatomical function. The epithelium also serves as a biological barrier against pathogens; its multiple layers make it difficult for microorganisms to penetrate to deeper tissues. Additionally, the superficial cells continuously exfoliate, helping to remove adherent pathogens. The epithelium maintains a slightly acidic pH when glycogen from exfoliated cells is metabolized by lactobacilli to lactic acid, creating an environment hostile to many pathogens. While it has some secretory function (through cervical glands, not the squamous epithelium itself) and does provide structural support, its primary roles are protective and defensive.
