Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH), also called corticotropin, is a peptide hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. Its primary target organ is the adrenal cortex, which is the outer layer of the adrenal glands located on top of the kidneys. Upon binding to receptors on adrenal cortical cells, ACTH stimulates the synthesis and release of corticosteroid hormones. This includes glucocorticoids (like cortisol, which regulate metabolism and stress response) and, to a lesser extent, mineralocorticoids (like aldosterone, which regulate salt and water balance). ACTH is crucial for maintaining the normal size and function of the adrenal cortex. Its release is controlled by Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone (CRH) from the hypothalamus in a classic feedback loop.
