Cold Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (Cold AIHA), specifically Cold Agglutinin Disease, is a condition where the immune system produces antibodies (usually IgM) that mistakenly target antigens on the person's own red blood cells. These antibodies have a unique property: they bind most strongly at lower temperatures (usually below normal body temperature, like in the extremities) and cause the red cells to clump together (agglutinate). This can lead to blockage of small blood vessels and the destruction of the agglutinated red cells, causing hemolytic anemia. It is often associated with infections like Mycoplasma pneumoniae or certain lymphoproliferative disorders.
