Did You Know?

This is an important index in a full blood count report. It is calculated by dividing the haematocrit (the volume of red cells) by the red cell count. The result, measured in femtoliters (fL), tells you if the red blood cells are normal in size (normocytic), smaller than normal (microcytic, often seen in iron deficiency), or larger than normal (macrocytic, often seen in vitamin B12 or folate deficiency). It helps narrow down the cause of an anaemia.
