Congenital & Perinatal Viral Infections
Q: Which virus is the most common cause of congenital infections?
Did You Know?
This statement is true. The GIL blood group system (ISBT 029) consists of a single high-frequency antigen, GIL. This antigen is located on aquaporin 3 (AQP3), a water and glycerol channel protein. Aquaporin 3 is expressed in red blood cells, kidneys, and other tissues. The GIL-negative phenotype is extremely rare and appears to be asymptomatic, although AQP3 is involved in water transport. Antibodies against GIL are rare but have been implicated in mild delayed hemolytic transfusion reactions. This is another example of a blood group antigen residing on a physiologically important membrane transport protein.
