While 'Managing complex medical equipment' is an important aspect of healthcare for some patients, it is not one of Dorothea Orem's 8 universal self-care requisites. Orem's universal requisites are fundamental needs that apply to all humans: (1) maintaining sufficient intake of air; (2) maintaining sufficient intake of water; (3) maintaining sufficient intake of food; (4) providing care associated with elimination processes; (5) maintaining balance between activity and rest; (6) maintaining balance between solitude and social interaction; (7) preventing hazards to life and well-being; and (8) promoting normalcy and development. Managing medical equipment would be considered a health-deviation self-care requisite—specific needs arising from illness, injury, or treatment. Orem's theory distinguishes between universal requisites (needs everyone has), developmental requisites (needs related to life stages), and health-deviation requisites (needs related to health conditions). This classification helps nurses identify appropriate interventions based on the type of self-care deficit.
