Did You Know?
Informed refusal is the right of a competent patient to decline a recommended treatment or procedure after being fully informed of its nature, benefits, risks, alternatives, and the consequences of refusal. It is the counterpart to informed consent and is equally protected by law and ethics. Nurses must document the refusal and ensure the patient's decision is voluntary and informed.
