Bronchial brushings are the most sensitive sampling technique for diagnosing central bronchial lesions. During bronchoscopy, a brush is directly applied to the lesion under visualization, allowing for targeted sampling. This yields well-preserved cellular material with minimal contamination and excellent morphological preservation. Multiple smears can be prepared, increasing diagnostic yield. While more invasive than sputum collection, bronchial brushings have much higher sensitivity for central tumors compared to sputum or bronchial washings, making them the preferred method for visible endobronchial lesions.
