This statement is true. Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) is an imaging technique that uses a probe inserted into the rectum to create pictures of the prostate gland. Its primary role in prostate cancer is not to diagnose cancer visually (most prostate cancers are not distinctly visible on standard ultrasound) but to guide systematic biopsies. The ultrasound provides a real-time map of the prostate, allowing the urologist to accurately place biopsy needles into specific areas (usually 10-12 systematic cores) to sample tissue. It can also measure prostate volume, which is used to calculate PSA density. While TRUS may sometimes identify a hypoechoic (dark) area that is suspicious for cancer, the definitive diagnosis always requires a pathological examination of the biopsied tissue under a microscope. TRUS is a procedural tool, not a diagnostic imaging test like MRI.
