Potency refers to the amount of drug needed to produce a given effect. The graded log dose−response curve plots the effect of a drug against the logarithm of its dose. The position of this curve along the x-axis (dose axis) indicates potency. A drug whose curve is further to the left requires a lower dose to produce the same effect and is therefore more potent. Comparing the positions of these curves for two drugs directly estimates their relative potency.
