In the life cycle of Plasmodium, the causative agent of malaria, the female Anopheles mosquito plays a dual and essential role. First, it acts as the definitive host because sexual reproduction (sporogony) occurs within the mosquito. After taking a blood meal from an infected human, male and female gametocytes fuse in the mosquito's gut to form a zygote, which develops into an oocyst and eventually produces infective sporozoites. Second, the mosquito acts as the biological vector because it transmits the infectious sporozoites to a new human host during a subsequent blood meal. The term 'vector' specifically refers to an arthropod that transmits an infectious agent. 'Biological vector' indicates that the parasite undergoes essential development or multiplication within the vector, as opposed to a 'mechanical vector' which simply transports the parasite without development.
