The primary nursing intervention for a patient with a seizure disorder is ensuring safety during a seizure and promoting medication adherence to control seizures. During a seizure, nurses should: protect the patient from injury (move furniture, cushion head); avoid restraining or placing anything in the mouth; turn the patient to the side to prevent aspiration; time the seizure; and observe characteristics. After the seizure, maintain side-lying position, check breathing, provide reassurance, and reorient. Between seizures, nurses administer antiepileptic drugs as prescribed, monitor for side effects, and educate about triggers (sleep deprivation, stress, alcohol). Documentation includes seizure description, duration, postictal state, and medication administration. Patient education covers medication adherence, seizure diary, safety precautions (shower not bath, no swimming alone), and when to seek help. Regular follow-up with neurology ensures optimal management.
