This statement is false. It confuses forward and reverse grouping. Forward grouping (also called cell grouping or front typing) tests the patient's red blood cells for the presence of A and/or B antigens. This is done by mixing the patient's red cells with known commercial antisera: anti-A and anti-B. Agglutination with anti-A indicates A antigens, with anti-B indicates B antigens. Reverse grouping (also called serum grouping or back typing) is the test that uses the patient's serum and mixes it with known reagent red blood cells (A1 cells and B cells) to detect the presence of anti-A and/or anti-B antibodies. Both tests are performed to confirm the ABO type and act as a quality control for each other.
