This is the **larval stage**, and the individual is called a **larva** (plural: larvae), commonly known as a **maggot**. The blowfly life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. After eggs are laid on a body (usually in moist orifices or wounds), they hatch into **first-instar larvae**. These tiny maggots immediately begin feeding on liquid proteins. They molt twice, growing into larger **second-instar** and then **third-instar larvae**. It is during the **third instar** that maggots are at their largest and most voracious, forming feeding masses that can skeletonize a body rapidly. They secrete digestive enzymes that liquefy tissue, which they then consume. This larval feeding activity is a major driver of the decomposition process during the "active decay" stage. After the feeding phase, the mature third-instar larvae migrate away from the body to find a dry, sheltered place to pupate. Therefore, the maggot (larval) stage is the primary consumer of soft tissue and is of paramount importance in PMI estimation.
