The trophozoite and cyst are two fundamental stages in the life cycles of many intestinal protozoa. The key biological characteristic that differentiates them is that the trophozoite is the active, metabolically active, and reproductive stage. It feeds, moves, and multiplies by binary fission within the host's intestine. In contrast, the cyst is a dormant, non-feeding, and non-reproductive stage. It is typically formed in response to unfavorable conditions (like moving into the colon) and is characterized by a protective wall, allowing for survival outside the host and facilitating transmission. While cysts are generally more resistant (A) and often the infective stage (C), and trophozoites may be motile (D), the core functional difference is that the trophozoite is the vegetative, active form responsible for growth and pathogenesis within the host.
