This statement is true. Histiocytes, which are tissue macrophages, are a normal non-epithelial cellular component that can be found in cervical smears. They are part of the body's immune surveillance system. Cytologically, histiocytes are characterized by their abundant cytoplasm that often appears 'foamy' or finely vacuolated due to phagocytic activity, and this cytoplasm typically stains a pale greenish-blue with Papanicolaou stain. Their nuclei are typically oval or kidney-bean shaped and may appear folded or indented. The chromatin is fine and evenly distributed. Histiocytes are commonly seen in the second half of the menstrual cycle and can increase in number during inflammation or healing processes. Their presence alone is not indicative of pathology.
