Psychosocial assessment evaluates psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions to understand patient's experience, identify support needs, and guide holistic care planning. Components: mental health (mood, affect, thought processes, suicide risk); coping strategies and stress levels; social support (family, friends, community); cultural and spiritual beliefs; economic factors affecting health; and health beliefs/behaviors. Nurses also assess: impact of illness on roles and relationships; and readiness for change. Documentation should be sensitive and respectful. Psychosocial assessment detects: depression, anxiety, inadequate support, spiritual distress, financial barriers to care. Regular monitoring guides: counseling referrals; support group recommendations; family involvement; and culturally competent care. Nurses educate about stress management and community resources. This assessment is crucial for chronic illness, mental health conditions, life transitions, or when psychosocial factors affect health outcomes. It enables person-centered care addressing whole person.
