The symptoms and microscopic findings are diagnostic for Trichomonas vaginalis infection. In pregnant women, untreated trichomoniasis is associated with several adverse obstetric outcomes. The most well-documented complications include preterm rupture of membranes (PROM), preterm delivery, and delivery of low-birth-weight infants. The inflammation caused by the parasite is thought to weaken the fetal membranes. While pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) can occur, it is less common with Trichomonas compared to Chlamydia or Gonorrhea. Infertility is a potential long-term complication of PID but not a direct, immediate complication of untreated trichomoniasis in pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy is also associated with PID, not directly with Trichomonas. Therefore, the most directly linked complication in pregnancy is preterm delivery.
