Ovulation, the release of a mature egg from the ovary, is the central event of the menstrual cycle and typically occurs around day 14 of a classic 28-day cycle. It marks the transition between the two main phases. The first half (days 1-14) is the follicular phase, where FSH stimulates follicle growth and rising estrogen levels thicken the uterine lining. The mid-cycle surge of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) triggers ovulation. The second half (days 15-28) is the luteal phase, where the ruptured follicle becomes the corpus luteum and secretes progesterone to prepare the endometrium for potential implantation.
