Albumin solutions (5% or 25%) are used for volume expansion in hypovolemic shock and to maintain colloid osmotic pressure in conditions like burns or liver disease. They are not a first-line treatment for hypovolemia (crystalloids are), but are used when colloid is specifically indicated.
