Staphylococci (often S. aureus) enter tissue via break in skin/mucosa. They resist phagocytosis (protein A, capsule). Toxins (leukocidins) kill leukocytes. Coagulase promotes fibrin wall, isolating infection. Accumulation of dead neutrophils, bacteria, and tissue debris forms pus, creating an abscess.
