Atrial fibrillation (often called 'auricular fibrillation' in older texts) is a common cardiac arrhythmia where the atria beat rapidly and irregularly, causing the ventricles to respond with an irregular, often rapid, and sometimes feeble pulse. The pulse is typically described as 'irregularly irregular'—having no predictable pattern. The pulse deficit (difference between apical and radial pulse rates) is often significant in atrial fibrillation because some of the weak ventricular contractions don't generate enough blood flow to be felt at the wrist. This condition increases stroke risk and requires medical management, so accurate pulse assessment by nurses is crucial for detection and monitoring.
