The two main prostanoids are thromboxane A2 (TXA2) and prostacyclin (PGI2). TXA2 is produced by platelets and causes vasoconstriction and platelet aggregation (pro-thrombotic). PGI2 is produced by vascular endothelium and causes vasodilation and inhibits platelet aggregation (anti-thrombotic). Their balance regulates vascular tone and hemostasis.
