Leydig cells, also known as interstitial cells, are located in the connective tissue between the seminiferous tubules in the testes. Their primary and defining function is endocrine: they synthesize and secrete testosterone, the principal male sex hormone. This process is stimulated by Luteinizing Hormone (LH) from the anterior pituitary. Testosterone is essential for the development and maintenance of male secondary sexual characteristics (like facial hair, deep voice, muscle mass), libido, and spermatogenesis (by acting on Sertoli cells within the tubules). Leydig cells do not produce sperm; that is the role of the germ cells within the seminiferous tubules, supported by Sertoli cells. They also do not store sperm; mature sperm are stored in the epididymis.
