Q: True or False: The term 'pathology' refers to the study of the causes and effects of disease.

Did You Know?

This statement is true. CD36 (also known as glycoprotein IV or GPIV) is a platelet and monocyte glycoprotein. Its absence defines the **Nak(a-negative) phenotype**, which is relatively common in populations of African and Asian descent (3-10%). On platelets, CD36 carries the Nakᵃ antigen (part of the CD36 blood group system, ISBT 036). Anti-Nakᵃ antibodies can cause **neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (NAIT)** and **post-transfusion purpura (PTP)**, making them clinically significant. CD36 also serves as a receptor for thrombospondin and collagen and is involved in platelet adhesion. In some regions, Nak(a-negative) platelet donors are recruited to provide compatible platelets for sensitized patients.
