Laboratory Management Principles and Functions
Q: Who is considered to be the father of modern management?
Did You Know?
The body uses sophisticated hormonal signaling cascades, often described as axes (like the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis), for precise control. In these cascades, the initial signal is often a peptide hormone released by the hypothalamus, such as Thyrotropin-Releasing Hormone (TRH). Peptides are chains of amino acids and are water-soluble. This intermediate hormone travels a short distance to the pituitary gland, stimulating it. The pituitary then releases a second hormone, which is often the terminal signal. In many classic pathways, this terminal hormone is a steroid (like cortisol or sex hormones) or a thyroid hormone. These are lipid-soluble, non-peptide molecules derived from cholesterol. Their chemical nature allows them to easily cross cell membranes and bind to receptors inside target cells to exert their final effects.
