Intermediate squamous cells are moderately mature epithelial cells that form the bulk of the squamous epithelium in women of reproductive age. They are larger than parabasal cells but smaller than superficial cells. Their typical diameter ranges from 20 to 40 micrometers (μm). These cells are polygonal (angular) in shape and often have folded edges. Their cytoplasm is usually cyanophilic (staining blue-green) and may be thin and flattened. The nucleus is vesicular (with clear, net-like chromatin) and measures about 6-9 μm in diameter, giving the cell a low nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratio. This size range distinguishes them from parabasal cells (15-25 μm) which are smaller and more rounded, and from superficial cells (30-60 μm) which are the largest squamous epithelial cells.
