Tissue microarray cores are not standardized to a single size but rather fall within a common range that balances sufficient material for analysis with the ability to densely pack many samples. The most frequently used diameters are between 0.6 millimeters and 2.0 millimeters. A 0.6 mm core is very small and allows for extremely high-density arrays (thousands of spots), ideal for screening studies where tissue is limited. A 1.0 mm or 1.5 mm core is a common choice, providing a more substantial amount of tissue for reliable staining while still allowing hundreds of spots per block. The 2.0 mm core is on the larger end, used when the marker of interest might have very focal expression or when more cellular material is needed for certain molecular techniques. The choice depends on the study's specific goals regarding sample number and analytical sensitivity.
