Macronutrients: Carbohydrates, Proteins, and Fats
Q: Which of the following is a primary macronutrient required in large amounts by the human body?
Did You Know?
Cholecystokinin (CCK) is a peptide hormone released by I-cells in the duodenum and jejunum in response to the presence of fats and proteins. Its two primary digestive functions are closely linked: 1) It stimulates the gallbladder to contract and release stored bile into the common bile duct and duodenum. Bile contains bile salts, which emulsify dietary fats, breaking them into smaller droplets to increase the surface area for pancreatic lipase to act upon. 2) It stimulates the exocrine pancreas to secrete a juice rich in digestive enzymes (like proteases, lipase, amylase). Additionally, CCK slows gastric emptying and promotes satiety by acting on the brain. Thus, CCK coordinates the gallbladder and pancreas to optimize the digestion of fats and proteins in the small intestine.
