According to Erik Erikson's psychosocial development theory, the final stage of life (late adulthood, typically 65+ years) involves the crisis of 'Integrity vs. Despair.' When elderly individuals look back on their lives with regret, unhappiness, and misery, they are experiencing despair. This occurs when people feel they have wasted their lives, made poor choices, or failed to accomplish their goals. Despair is characterized by bitterness, regret, hopelessness, and fear of death. In contrast, those who achieve integrity feel satisfied with their life choices and accept both their accomplishments and failures as part of their life story. Despair represents the negative resolution of this final developmental crisis, where individuals become consumed by what they perceive as missed opportunities and life failures.
