Mental Status Examination
Q: When assessing a patient's 'mental status', which component evaluates the patient's awareness of person, place, time, and situation?

Droplet transmission occurs when respiratory droplets containing pathogens are generated during coughing, sneezing, talking, singing, or certain medical procedures (suctioning, bronchoscopy). These droplets are relatively large (>5 microns) and travel short distances (typically <1 meter/3 feet) before settling onto surfaces. Diseases spread by droplets include: influenza, pertussis, meningococcal meningitis, diphtheria, pneumonic plague, and COVID-19 (though it also has airborne potential). Prevention requires: source control (masking symptomatic patients); droplet precautions (surgical masks for healthcare workers within 1 meter); respiratory hygiene/cough etiquette; and possibly eye protection. Unlike airborne transmission (which requires special respirators and negative pressure rooms for microscopic particles that remain suspended), droplet precautions are less stringent but equally important. Understanding transmission routes guides appropriate infection control measures to protect both patients and healthcare workers.
