Contact precautions are a type of transmission-based precaution used to prevent the spread of infectious agents that are transmitted by direct contact with the patient or indirect contact with surfaces or patient care items in the patient's environment. Examples include MRSA, VRE, and C. difficile. Key measures include placing the patient in a private room (or cohorting with the same infection), wearing gloves and a gown for all room entry and patient contact, and using dedicated patient care equipment.
