The primary chemical used in modern arterial embalming is **formaldehyde**, usually in the form of a buffered aqueous solution called **formalin**. Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a pungent gas that, when dissolved in water, forms methylene glycol. In embalming, a concentrated mixture containing formaldehyde, methanol (as a stabilizer), and other agents (such as humectants, surfactants, and dyes) is injected into the circulatory system via an artery. The formaldehyde acts as a powerful **fixative** and **disinfectant**. It penetrates tissues and causes cross-linking of proteins (particularly with amino groups in lysine residues), which hardens tissues, halts cellular autolysis (self-digestion), and kills bacteria. This process temporarily retards decomposition and allows for viewing of the body. However, embalming significantly alters tissue chemistry and can interfere with later forensic toxicological analysis by diluting, redistributing, or reacting with drugs and poisons present in the body at death.
