Q: Which of the following best describes the clinical application of molecular diagnostics in virology?

Did You Know?

Trichomonas vaginalis is classified as an STI because its primary and most efficient mode of transmission is through direct sexual contact. This is due to its biological characteristics: it exists only as a fragile trophozoite stage that cannot form environmentally resistant cysts. The trophozoites survive poorly outside the warm, moist environment of the urogenital tract. They quickly desiccate and die on surfaces, in water, or on clothing. Therefore, transmission via toilet seats, swimming pools, or shared towels is extremely rare and epidemiologically insignificant. The close mucosal contact during sexual intercourse provides the direct transfer of trophozoites in genital secretions from one person's urogenital tract to another's, which is necessary for successful infection. This biological requirement defines it as an obligate STI.
