This dual behavior depends critically on the context, specifically the concentration of the natural hormone present. Some chemicals are weak partial agonists. In a low-hormone environment (for example, in a developing fetus or under certain physiological conditions), this weak chemical may be the only molecule available to bind the receptor. Its binding, though not as effective as the natural hormone, can still produce a small degree of receptor activation, acting as an agonist. However, in a high-hormone environment where the natural, potent hormone is abundant, the same chemical competes for the receptor binding sites. By occupying these sites without providing strong activation, it prevents the more powerful natural hormone from working, thereby acting as an antagonist. This context-dependent action makes predicting the effects of such chemicals complex.
