The primary nursing concern for Cushing's syndrome (hypercortisolism) is managing metabolic complications and preventing infections while addressing body image issues. Cushing's features: central obesity, moon face, buffalo hump, purple striae, hypertension, hyperglycemia, osteoporosis, immunosuppression. Nursing interventions: monitor blood pressure and glucose; administer medications to reduce cortisol if indicated; protect from infection (avoid crowds, good hand hygiene); prevent fractures (fall precautions); and provide emotional support for body changes. Documentation includes vital signs, glucose levels, and psychological response. Patient education about medication adherence (if post-surgical adrenal insufficiency), signs of infection, and lifestyle modifications (low-sodium, low-sugar diet). Causes: pituitary adenoma (Cushing's disease), adrenal tumor, exogenous steroids. Surgical treatment may lead to adrenal insufficiency requiring steroid replacement. Nurses monitor for both effects of excess cortisol and complications of treatment. Quality of life issues significant due to physical changes.
