Q: What is the medical term for difficulty swallowing?
Did You Know?
True. The **pubic symphysis** is one of the most important skeletal sites for estimating **age at death in adults**. The pubic symphysis is the joint where the left and right pubic bones meet at the front of the pelvis. During a person's life, the symphyseal face—the surface of the bone at this joint—undergoes a series of predictable, age-related morphological changes. In young adults (late teens to 20s), the face is textured with distinct ridges and furrows. As age increases, these features gradually smooth out, a rim forms around the edge, and eventually, the face begins to degenerate, showing porosity and irregular margins. Forensic anthropologists compare the appearance of an unknown skeleton's pubic symphysis to standardized phase diagrams (like the Suchey-Brooks method) that depict these changes at different age ranges. While other areas like the sternal ends of the ribs and cranial sutures are also used, the pubic symphysis is a primary standard for adult age estimation because its changes are relatively consistent and well-documented.
